Experience Matters: Dr. Chris Taylor of Bladder & Bowel Institute
Dr. Chris Taylor has been taking care of women’s healthcare needs for nearly twenty-five years. Over the years, Dr. Taylor has recognized the need in the community for someone to specialize in the treatment of female bladder and bowel control issues.
Despite practicing in a small community, it has always been important that his patients have access to the same advanced therapies commonly found in large metropolitan areas. Now, focusing his practice on incontinence treatment, he helps women with bladder and bowel control problems using an FDA approved therapy called InterStim®.
Education and Training
Dr. Taylor grew up in the small community of Russellville, Arkansas, completed medical school at UAMS in Little Rock, and went on to complete his residency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi. At the time, the University of Mississippi OBGYN residency was one of the most highly ranked in the country. Contributing to this was the high volume of surgical cases performed, as well as the fact that some of the most challenging OBGYN cases in Mississippi ended up under their care. As a result, Dr. Taylor was able to quickly gain a level of surgical experience it typically takes gynecologists years to achieve.
At the conclusion of his residency, Dr. Taylor was recruited by several large practices in bigger cities but felt the pull to return to the small-town roots of his home state.
The Most Rewarding Part of His Career
“I think we are fulfilling a tremendous need by providing care in an underserved area. It’s so rewarding to have a positive impact on the lives of so many women,” Dr. Taylor says about his career path.
One of the most important aspects of Dr. Taylor’s practice is his ability to connect with patients on a personal level.
Dr. Taylor often says, “you can’t fake empathy. You could be the most talented surgeon in the world, but if you fail to connect with your patients on a personal level, you’re missing out on the most rewarding part of a physician-patient relationship.”
How Dr. Taylor Has Helped Change Women’s Healthcare
Women continue to suffer from the same conditions: prolapse, incontinence, the need for hysterectomies, and other procedures. Over time, approaches to correcting these problems have become more effective and less invasive.
There are a few notable ways in which Dr. Taylor has been able to offer better treatment for gynecological procedures:
Minimally-Invasive Hysterectomies: Ten to fifteen years ago, the majority of hysterectomies were performed through surgery that required a large incision and a three to four-day hospital stay and up to six weeks of recovery. At that time, Dr. Taylor was the first OBGYN in the state of Arkansas to perform total hysterectomies laparoscopically or vaginally in an outpatient setting. Now, 99% of hysterectomies performed by Dr. Taylor are completed in this manner and patients are typically back to work in ten to fourteen days.
Life-changing Bladder Control Treatment: “There was a time when medications were the main tool we had to treat overactive bladder. But for many patients, medications didn’t work well, had a lot of side effects, or were just too expensive. Now, we focus on a minimally invasive outpatient procedure called InterStim®.”
InterStim® Therapy for Bladder and Bowel Control has been shown in clinical trials to be more effective than overactive bladder medication. After nearly 25 years of treating female bladder and other health problems, Dr. Taylor has now treated over 35,000 women, performed over 7,500 sacral nerve stimulation procedures for female bladder and bowel control issues, and Bladder & Bowel Institute is the #1 provider of this therapy in the entire world.
