InterStim® Test Equipment Instructions

The journey towards reclaiming control of your life involves understanding the equipment associated with the InterStim® test and navigating through the 3 – 4 day trial period effectively. This video walks you through the trial period.

The 3 – 4 day trial period is important in helping us assess if this therapy is the right fit for you. At the conclusion of your test procedure, we equip you with a small external stimulator, an inconspicuous device that connects to the wires placed beneath your skin. This stimulator provides the gentle electrical pulses that help correct the miscommunication between the pelvic floor and the brain that is potentially causing your symptoms. You’ll also receive an elastic belt with a small pouch to comfortably carry the stimulator under your clothes. To adjust the level of stimulation, a user-friendly remote control is provided.

The trial period requires some caution on your part. The temporary wires are placed close to the nerves controlling bladder and bowel functions, and they are securely taped to your skin to reduce the risk of movement. To help keep those wires in place and ensure a successful trial, we advise against excessive bending, stretching, or heavy lifting. Being slow and careful with your movements will prevent any potential dislocation of the wires. It’s equally important to keep the area dry – sponge bathing, rather than taking a full bath or full shower, is recommended during the 3 – 4 day trial to protect the wires.

Recording your symptoms during the trial is key to monitoring the therapy’s effectiveness. We will provide you with a bladder or bowel diary for you to track your symptoms. Regular check-ins will be scheduled to discuss your progress and ensure you’re comfortable with the process.

This page serves as a comprehensive guide to navigating the 3 – 4 day trial with ease and confidence. As you take the time to watch the video, remember, we’re here for you every step of the way.
